The Tragedy & Triumph of Samson – featuring Delilah
The 2008 Christian Rock Eisteddfod production at the Hills Centre Castle Hill of ‘The Tragedy & Triumph of Samson – featuring Delilah’ was `a tight professional production,’ said Judge Krista Elliott, adding, `The lighting by Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College, Fletcher, Hunter Christian School, Mayfield, and All Saints Grammar, Belmore South, was so professional it kept me spellbound’. The other Judges, David & Marianna Johnston from the Wesley Institute agreed that it was a very difficult decision to choose the winners.
- Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College, Fletcher was the Winner of the 1st Prize of $1,000 a student from the College will also receive a Personal Development Course from June Dally-Watkins and presented by the Wesley Mission CEO, Rev Keith Garner.
- All Saints Grammar Belmore was the winner of the Encouragement Award donated by NSW Farmers Association, which was presented by CEO Shaughn Morgan. The school also received the same opportunity from Miss Dally.
- Kellyville High School was the winner of the The Most Appropriate Choice of Music
- St Dominics College, Kingswood was the winner of the Most Creative Lighting Design
- Hunter Christian School was the winner of the Outstanding Costume Design
David Sanders, from the NSW Talent Development Project, was the ‘surprise finale’ at the 2008 Christian Rock Eisteddfod held at the Hills Centre, Castle Hill Saturday 10th May night.
‘David surprised the audience and surprised me, he is such a wonderful young operatic singer,’ said Oanh Nguyen, Director, Accelerated Center for Education.
Charlotte Jane and husband Shami opened the evening and warmed the hearts of the audience with their unique line up of vocals, jazz violin and guitar before the High Schools presented their performance from the book of Judges.
Channel 9 News Reporter, Lynda Kinkade, compered the event and was acknowledged as having enhanced the evening by responding to and encouraging the high schools students interviews in her warm and personal way.
Carol McGregor signed centre stage, presenting an aura of peace as she interpreted actor Frank Bradley’s narrative rendition of each student’s written narration.
Says Producer Christine Leaves, ‘I think that this is the slickest and most moving production we have done, apart from the inaugural production in 1998. I am so grateful to all the people who have supported this concept and to the teachers, students and parents who work so hard to do most of this outside school hours’.

WHAT IS A CHRISTIAN ROCK EISTEDDFOD?
It is a Bible Study Project, where students are asked to research a certain section of the Bible. This section of the Bible, chosen by the Producer, has been broken down into several scenes. A certain number of High Schools are then chosen to be the ‘team players’ select the scene of that section of the Bible and then prepare to take this section of the Bible to the Stage as a ‘Production’.
This project is usually worked on over a 7 month period.
After the have locked in the Scene, they then take time to listen to various forms of Christian and classical music that will create the dramatics and interpretation of their scene. The students then decide on dialogue that they will incorporate into their scene to be recorded when they record their various bits of music. This becomes their backdrop for their dramatic interpretation of the Scriptures.
They add set design, lighting design, costume design and choreography.
The CRE Organisation supports them all along the way and provides FREE training in many areas.
The CRE Organisation encourages high schools to consider incorporating this project into their curriculum so that students can work on this in their school hours and be part of their ‘course’, not only as a religious education project, eg: The narration required and that is now written by students provides another area for
students to gain experience in creative writing.
The high schools that performed this year in the ‘Tragedy & Triumph of Samson – featuring Delilah were:

Kellyville High School
St Dominics College
