Students facing additional hurdles to get into and succeed at university are set to benefit from a new Turnbull Government grant to Western Sydney University with new funding to help remove barriers to get to university.

Liberal Senator for New South Wales, Marise Payne said Western Sydney University will receive $10,230,676 to run programs that support students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“We’re delivering extra funding for Western Sydney University to implement strategies that will help make university a realistic goal for students from low socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds and that staff can support these students to achieve their best at university,” Senator Payne said.

“This funding will help Western Sydney University undertake vital research to build evidence, pilot innovative approaches and improve program delivery to better support students’ access to tertiary education.

“These grants support people from a range of backgrounds from people with disability to Indigenous Australians, people from rural and remote areas, non-English speakers and women looking to go into traditionally male-dominated areas of study.”

Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham said the Turnbull Government would distribute more than $135 million to Australian universities through the HEPPP program in 2017.

“I’m delighted that Western Sydney University will use these funds to bring their courses to low SES students across Western Sydney,” Senator Payne said.
