St Albans

St Albans is a serene historic hamlet, only 20 kilometres from Wisemans Ferry along scenic St Albans Road and surrounded by National Parks and farmland of the Macdonald Valley.

Whether staying overnight or passing through on a day trip, St Albans is a must stop destination.

The two free car ferries that cross the Hawkesbury River link Settlers Road and St Albans Road at Wisemans Ferry.

Walk the Convict Trail and view sections of the Great North Road that are still in their original condition. The Old Great North Road was built by chain gang convicts between 1826 and 1834. Carved from Hawkesbury sandstone the road was an outstanding engineering achievement for its time. A 2 hour round walk will take you through some of the most spectacular sections of the road and information interpretive signs have been place by the National Parks and wildlife service. The large sandstone blocks were carved and placed so well, that the wall still stands, perfectly aligned, today. Some of the more noteworthy features include Hangman’s Cave, original convict carved graffiti and the remains of a well and building foundations.

St Albans Bridge crosses the Macdonald River and was opened in 1901, when it replaced an earlier bridge that was washed away by floods. It is classified by the national Trust.

St Albans Common features a natural lake area and grassland and is a sanctuary for birds, kangaroos and wallabies.

St Albans Cemetery also features the graves of many first fleeter who’s stories you can read on the gravestones. The cemetery is no longer in use but is preserved under trust.

The Settlers Arms Inn is one of Sydney’s earliest hotels and is still popular today. The inn was built around 1836 and is another prime example of convict hewn sandstone. It is a popular destination for visitors to soak up the historic surroundings.

Historic cottages such as Price Morris Cottage and the Courthouse Guesthouse have been restored to provide cosy accommodation. There are also bed and breakfasts, the friendly pub or basic camping areas to rest your head.
